The Magic of Disney Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios opened only on September 14, 2026. Barely two weeks later, its centrepiece show “Olaf Draws!” is running without its lead character.

What happened

On September 22, the attraction had to close temporarily because of technical problems with the Olaf animatronic; audio in the building also cut in and out. It reopened the same day – but the fault remained.

Since then the show has been running in so-called B-mode.

What B-mode means

B-mode is Disney’s term for the reduced operating version of an attraction when an element fails. In practice here: Olaf does not appear at all. His drawing desk and the area where he stands are covered with drapes.
The rest of the show runs largely unchanged, with one conspicuous exception: at the point where Olaf would normally hold up his finished drawing for the audience, there is now an empty pause.

Cast members indicated the show would run in B-mode “for the remainder of the day.” When Olaf returns is not known. There is no official Disney statement.

Why this is more than a technical glitch

When Disney announced it would build the new animation attraction around an animatronic rather than a live artist, parts of the fan community objected. The argument then: if the machine fails, the show cannot go on.
That is exactly what has now happened – two weeks after opening. In the predecessor, the Animation Academy, a cast member hosted the drawing class live. A failure of this kind was structurally impossible there.

This is not a verdict on whether the decision was wrong – modern animatronics routinely have faults during their break-in period, and the problem may be resolved within days. But it is the first practical confirmation of the objection.

The Paris connection

There is a technical link to World of Frozen at Disney Adventure World, where a free-walking Olaf animatronic has performed in the boat show “A Celebration in Arendelle” since March. There, too, a fallback exists: when the figure malfunctions, it is replaced by a puppet in the show.

Two different figures in two locations – but the same underlying question about how robust elaborate animatronics are in continuous operation.
